The Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has issued a stern warning to residents as the harmattan season takes hold, cautioning that indiscriminate bush burning remains a criminal offence under state law. The Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Ugwu, highlighted the dangers posed by uncontrolled fires, noting that they are a leading cause of fire outbreaks during the dry season. He explained that bush burning for purposes such as hunting, land clearing, the use of fireworks, and the careless disposal of cigarette butts often ignite wildfires that threaten lives, property, and the environment. According to the Commissioner, such acts cause significant destruction every year and contravene the provisions of the Enugu State Environmental and Climate Protection Law. Peter Mbah on Agriculture, has emphasized the state government’s active drive for clustered, mechanized farming and structured distribution of farm produce across Enugu State. Ogbuekwe made this known in an interview, describing the initiative as a “two-pronged strategy” that enables both smallholder and large-scale farmers to operate efficiently, share resources, and engage in cooperative or out-grower and in-grower models. Odo made the disclosure at the weekend during the conduct of the 2025 civil service promotion examinations, where no fewer than 856 senior officers, including those in the management cadre, sat for computer-based tests (CBT) as part of the promotion process. 5-Day Final Notice: Abandoned Cars and Illegal Roadside Activities to Attract Sanctions

The Enugu State government has issued a joint notice directing the removal of all abandoned and broken-down vehicles from public roads, warning that enforcement operations will commence on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) made this known, stating that vehicle owners, mechanics, and others occupying road verges and unauthorised spaces have a five-day grace period from the announcement date to remove their vehicles. The agencies expressed concern over the growing number of abandoned and derelict vehicles, as well as the use of road corridors as makeshift mechanic workshops. Activities such as oil spillage, fuel leakage, welding, and other unregulated operations on the roads have weakened asphalt, damaged road structures, obstructed traffic, and posed safety risks to road users. Confident in a positive outcome, the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) will be invited for final validation, advancing Enugu State’s goal of achieving ODF status by December 2025. The exercise which began with a desk review at the Igbo-Etiti LGA headquarters in Ogbede, involved the LGA WASH Department and the UNICEF State WASH Facilitator. Governor Peter Mbah selected the two slums to be the first beneficiaries among over 20 slum areas in Enugu urban earmarked for redevelopment in line with the city’s master plan. The first phase of the estate which consists of 103 buildings has 206 units of two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, with solar-powered boreholes already in place, ensuring a steady supply of potable water and providing comfort for residents while the slums are rebuilt.
