President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu arrived in the United Kingdom on March 18, 2026, for a two-day state trip to strengthen diplomatic relations, trade and cultural partnerships between Nigeria and the UK.

The visit, marking the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years, included bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and meetings with government officials, business leaders and religious figures. They were received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

A key outcome of the engagements was a £746 million export finance deal to modernise the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa) and Tin Can Island Port, reached during the President’s meeting with PM Keir Starmer, with discussions covering security cooperation, defence, trade, and inclusive growth. The deal, backed by UK Export Finance and coordinated by Citibank, is expected to improve cargo handling, reduce congestion, and strengthen efficiency at the ports, which handle a significant share of Nigeria’s imports and exports.

Speaking at a state banquet at Windsor Castle, President Tinubu said he was committed to strengthening Nigeria–UK relations, highlighting shared democratic values, historical ties and cooperation in governance. He referenced the contributions of Nigerians in the United Kingdom, particularly in healthcare and sports, and called for continued collaboration in trade, security and development between both nations. The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, gave reflections at Lambeth Palace, the residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, on the sidelines of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two-day official visit to the United Kingdom. The engagement formed part of broader interactions focused on faith, leadership, and moral values in nation-building.

Attention also turned to education following an announcement by the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, of a partnership with Coventry University to establish a programme offering UK-accredited degrees in Nigeria. The proposed campus in Alaro City will offer programmes in STEMM, business and TVET disciplines, with admissions expected between the third and fourth quarters of 2026.

Earlier, the visit began with a ceremonial reception at Windsor Castle, where the President and First Lady were received with full ceremonial honours. The official programme was adjusted to accommodate President Tinubu’s observance of Ramadan, including meal timing.

King Charles III presented the President and First Lady with artefacts from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. The display, held in the Green Drawing Room, highlighted shared history and cultural ties between Nigeria and the UK, and offered an opportunity for public and diaspora engagement.

The Nigerian delegation included Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi; Ministers Wale Edun, Jumoke Oduwole, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, Bosun Tijani and Hannatu Musawa; General Christopher Musa (rtd); and Governors Peter Mbah and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, among other officials.

Details in this report are based on official State House press releases and verified accounts. Officials from Nigeria and the United Kingdom have expressed optimism that the engagements and agreements reached will yield tangible benefits in the coming months and years ahead.
